SMEs Expect Revenue Profit Performance to Improve |
Small to medium enterprises are predicting profits to increase in the next six months.
In New South Wales 46.5% of SMEs were expecting revenue to increase in the next six months, compared to only 15% that expected it to fall in the last six months, according to the national SME Index survey conducted by News Community Media and Access Management Corporation.
The survey of almost 2000 SMEs also found that 45% of NSW respondents were expecting their profit to increase in the next six months. NSW businesses were less confident than other states about what the immediate future – reflecting the
greater economic hardship faced by the state so far this year.
More businesses were expecting to hire new staff than reduce staff numbers, indicating that the worst may be over for businesses in this important sector.
Kari Baynes, Cumberland-Courier Newspapers Group Advertising Director, said the findings indicated a positive outlook for businesses in NSW.
Other findings include:
• Dissatisfaction with all levels of government support for small to medium enterprises, particularly in the areas of
council rates and GST support.
• Continued frustration with the lack of interest rate reductions passed on by banks and other organisations.
• While traditional media still holds an important place in SME advertising, company websites and email marketing
are now very popular ways for promoting a business.
• Forward planning is still an issue with many businesses, as only 41% are developing marketing plans.
• Key areas of support and business advice for SMEs included accountants, online resources, other SME owners, and family and friends.
Industries with the greatest confidence about the future include Information, Media and Technology, Education and Training, and Utility Services. Businesses in the Manufacturing and Construction sectors predict a slower return to growth.
